The landscape
In the north-east of the Principality of Andorra, on the border with the French Ariège, the Juclar glacial cirque is one of the most impressive alpine landscapes in the entire Pyrenees. Deep blue glacial waters, red granite, rugged ridges and surprising biodiversity coexist in a pristine territory of great ecological value.
The lakes
The Juclar lakes, at around 2,280 metres altitude, were formed by glacial action that shaped this cirque during the ice ages. Their crystal-clear waters, fed by snow and rainfall, remain cold well into summer.
The lake system forms an exceptional aquatic ecosystem, home to brown trout and a meeting point for numerous species of waterfowl and birds of prey.
Flora
Despite the altitude and harsh climate, the area around the Juclar lakes hosts a surprisingly diverse range of plant life.
Wildlife
The refuge's surroundings are one of the few places in Andorra where you can spot Pyrenean chamois, marmots, white-tailed ptarmigan and, if you're lucky, the elusive bearded vulture soaring over the ridges.
